12/2011  The Life and Career of Glenn Ford: Next on TV CONFIDENTIAL

Actor and author Peter Ford will be our special guest on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

One of Hollywood's most versatile leading men for more than six decades, Glenn Ford was an incredibly gifted actor whose naturalistic style enabled him to conquer virtually every film genre, from romantic comedies to hard-boiled film noir to epic Western stories. But though he always seemed at ease in front of the camera, Glenn Ford off-camera was a complex, driven man who could be intensely distant to those closest to him, while his serial philandering - including affairs with the likes of Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe - led to a string of failed marriages, personal heartache, and long periods in which he estranged himself from his only son, Peter Ford.

That dichotomy is at the heart of Glenn Ford: A Life, an absorbingly written book by Peter Ford that provides a moving, nuanced portrait of the star of Blackboard Jungle, Gilda, 3:10 to Yuma, Ransom, Teahouse of the August Moon, The Courtship of Eddie's Father and other classic films, as well as Cade's County, Brotherhood of the Bell and other television productions. Told with the keen insight and unflinching candor that only Ford's son could provide, the book also interviews with dozens of Glenn Ford's co-stars, including Ernest Borgnine, Sidney Poitier, Evelyn Keyes, Debbie Reynolds, Shirley Jones, James Whitmore, Carl Reiner, and Angela Lansbury, as well as such directors as Vincent Sherman, Delbert Mann and Richard Donner. We'll learn what it was like to grow up as the son of Glenn Ford, as well as discuss some of his father's most famous screen roles, when Peter Ford joins us in our second hour.

Peter Ford will be appearing at the Hollywood Heritage Museum in the Lasky-DeMille Barn, 2100 N. Highland Avenue in Hollywood, CA (right across from the Hollywood Bowl) on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 beginning at 7:30pm. Tickets are $5 for members, $10 for non-members, and can be purchased online at BrownPaperTickets.com. For more information, call 323-874-2276 or visit www.hollywoodheritage.org.

Peter Ford is also the subject of A Little Prince, a forthcoming documentary by Alexander Roman about Peter's life as the only son of Glenn Ford and Eleanor Powell. To view the trailer, visit www.alittleprince.net.

Also on tap this week: Holiday gift ideas for film and TV aficionados; the third and final installment of our tribute to TV talk show pioneer Joe Franklin; and This Week in TV History.

12/5/11  TV Confidentail Presents with Ed Robertson:  Sid Veda and Phil Cooke: Next on TV CONFIDENTIAL

Actor/comedian Sid Veda and author, filmmaker and media guru Phil Cooke will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

Known nationally to TV audiences as Chad, the Brillo-haired, thickly mustachioed half of Ranjit and Chad, the "hosts" of Tech Talk on the popular series of commercials for mobile phone service provider MetroPCS, Sid Veda has performed with or opened for such comics as Jack Black, Chris Rock, Russell Peters and The Upright Citizens Brigade. We'll ask Sid about some of his influences as a comedian, as well as his work on the NBC comedy series Outsourced, when he joins us in our first hour.

Also joining us this week will be author, speaker, filmmaker and media consultant Phil Cooke, a man who helps clients create platforms that influence culture and get their voices heard. The key message of Phil's latest book, JOLT: Get the Jump on a World That's Constantly Changing, is that life today is not so much about knowing the future, but actually getting ready for it. Among other things, that means letting go of ideas that are no longer effective, no matter how hard that can be. We'll ask Phil about that, and particularly how that idea applies in the world of television, when he joins us in our second hour.

Plus: Phil Gries with Part 2 of our tribute to TV talk show pioneer Joe Franklin; and Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with a brand new This Week in TV History.

"Zombie in Love" Kelly Dipuccinio, Icon Zombie in Love (5.2 MB)

11/14/11  Actor Tony Denison and author Greg Ehrbar will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Tuesday 11/15 at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

Currently starring along with Kyra Sedgwick on the Emmy Award-winning drama The Closer, Tony Denison has also created many other memorable roles in such stage, screen and television productions as Art of Revenge, Deadly, Little Vegas, Getting Gotti, Prison Break, The Effect, Playmakers and, last but not least, crime kingpin Ray Luca in Michael Mann's Crime Story.

The Closer resumes its final season on TNT with new episodes beginning Monday, Nov. 28 at 9pm ET and PT. We'll ask Tony what lies ahead in the final weeks of The Closer, plus we'll take a peak at Major Crimes, the spin-off of The Closer that Tony will star in, along with Mary McDonnell, beginning in 2012. All this, and maybe a question or two about Crime Story, when Tony Denison joins us in our first hour.

Also joining us this week will be Grammy Award-nominated writer/producer Greg Ehrbar. Greg is the co-author, along with Tim Hollis, of Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records, the definitive book on the history of Disney music and its impact on children and families throughout the world for more than six decades. Mouse Tracks not only introduces readers to many of the talented voice actors, singers, songwriters and musicians who helped shaped that legacy (including Annette Funicello, Sterling Holloway, Thurl Ravenscroft, Ginny Tyler, Dallas McKennon and Tutti Camarata), but also includes such fun facts as the strange but true connection between Walt Disney Records and the theme to Gilligan's Island. We'll find out that is, and more, when Greg Ehrbar joins us in our second hour.

All this, plus This Week in TV History. It's a full program as always... we certainly hope you'll join us.

10/31/11  Actress Michael Learned, singer Beverley Staunton and music journalist Jon Burlingame will be our guests on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

Winner of four Emmy Awards, including three for her portrayal of family matriarch Olivia Walton on The Waltons, the long-running CBS drama that was a Thursday night ritual for many of us every week throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Michael Learned is also an accomplished stage actress who has headlined many productions on and off Broadway, including Gore Vidal's The Best Man, the national tour of On Golden Pond, Wendy Wasserstein's The Sisters Rosenweig and Lewis Black's One Slight Hitch.

Michael Learned is currently starring, along with Granville van Dusen, in Southern Comforts, a romantic "opposites attract" comedy about a Southern widow and a New Jersey widower who find love late in life. Hailed by The New York Times as "a delightful and sneakily sexy romance," Southern Comforts is playing at The Falcon Theatre in Burbank (818-955-8101; www.falcontheatre.com) through Sunday, Nov. 13. We'll talk about what attracted Michael to the play, her early background as an actress, her fondness for the theatre and, of course, The Waltons when she joins us in our second hour.

Also joining us this week will be Beverley Staunton, primary lead vocalist on ABC's Dancing with the Stars - a role that requires the kind of versatility that Beverley has shown throughout her musical career, which has seen her perform with such artists as Bette Midler, Michael Buble, Julio Iglesias, Barry Manilow, Kelly Clarkson, Lionel Ritchie, Martina McBride, Dionne Warwick and James Taylor.

Beverley's new CD, Everything Changes, is an upbeat collection of songs that showcases her musical style as a Country/Pop artist. We'll talk about the CD, as well as go behind the scenes of Dancing with the Stars, when Beverley joins us at the bottom of our second hour.

Our first hour will include a tribute to the late Pete Rugolo, the Emmy Award-winning composer and arranger who wrote the theme music for such classic TV shows as Richard Diamond, Private Detective, Thriller, Run for Your Life and The Fugitive. Though many of us think of Pete in terms of his TV compositions, his career in television only scratched the surface of his many contributions to the world of music.

Joining us as we remember Pete Rugolo will be music journalist and music historian Jon Burlingame. Jon's writings on the subject of music in film and television include such books as TV's Biggest Hits: The Story of Television Themes from Dragnet to Friends, which includes comments from Jon's interviews with Pete Rugolo and other great composers. We'll also feature some of Pete's work in television as part of our bumper music in our first hour.

Also this week: Phil Gries with Part 2 of our look back of the early television career of Woody Allen, including rare audio of his appearances with Johnny Carson, Steve Allen and Merv Griffin. Allen's life and career will be the subject of Seriously Funny: The Comic Art of Woody Allen, a two-part documentary that will air Nov. 20-21 on PBS.

10/25/11  Actor Dennis Farina will be our special guest on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

One of the industry's busiest actors, Dennis Farina's many credits in film and television include Out of Sight, Get Shorty, Bottle Shock, That Old Feeling, Saving Private Ryan, Reindeer Games, Buddy Faro, Empire Falls, Midnight Run, Thief and, of course, Crime Story. Dennis' latest series, Luck, a provocative look at the world of horse racing executive produced by Michael Mann and David Milch, will premiere on HBO in January 2012.

Dennis Farina is also the star of The Last Rites of Joe May, the story of an aging, short-money hustler looking for redemption that has elements of such classic films as Tender Mercies and High Noon. Throughout it all Farina delivers a riveting, memorable performance. We'll talk about Joe May, as well as some of Dennis' other notable screen roles, when he joins us in our second hour.

The Last Rites of Joe May will be available to more than 40 million homes nationwide via Movies on Demand for eight weeks beginning Oct. 27. Check your cable or satellite carrier for more information. The film will also be available for instant viewing via iTunes, Amazon Instant Video and VUDU; in addition, it will have a limited theatrical release in New York during the month of November.

Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen will join us in our first hour as we take a look at the first month of the new television season: Which shows are doing well, which have already been canceled, which ones we've seen and which ones we'd recommend watching again. Plus: Phil Gries with some rare audio of the early television appearances of Woody Allen, whose life and career will be the subject of Seriously Funny: The Comic Art of Woody Allen, a two-part documentary that will air Nov. 20-21 on PBS.

10/18/11  Stacy Keach, Sixty Years of Lucy, and the Passing of Steve Jobs: Next on TV CONFIDENTIAL

Actor Stacy Keach, writer/producer Joseph Dougherty, authors Barry Monush and James Sheridan, pop culture historian Robert J. Thompson, and inventor Gary Greenberg will be our guests on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

John Huston once said that Stacy Keach "is not just a star... he is a constellation. The audience will come to see whatever character he plays." And whether you think of Keach as King Lear, Ken Titus, the narrator of the Twilight Zone radio dramas or Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, the Golden Globe Award-winning actor has continued to captivate audiences on stage, screen and television for more than five decades.

Long interested in the study of science, Stacy Keach recently collaborated with artist, inventor and scientist Dr. Gary Greenberg on Mary's Magic Microscope: The Sand Bandit, the first in a series of children's books featuring a modern-day Nancy Drew that Stacy and Gary hope will inspire middle-school aged kids to discover the wonders and the possibilities of science fact. We'll talk about the book, as well as other aspects of Stacy's distinguished acting career, when Stacy and Gary join us in our second hour.

In our first hour, we'll celebrate the 60th anniversary of the premiere of I Love Lucy along with James Sheridan and Barry Monush, co-authors of Lucille Ball FAQ: Everything Left to Know About America's Favorite Redhead. James and Barry provide Lucy fans with a dispensable look at the Original Queen of Comedy, from her life growing up, her love interests, her various inspirations, and a ton of information about her films and TV series, including I Love Lucy.

Also this week: We'll play Part 2 of our conversation with Emmy winner Joseph Dougherty, one of the writers and producers of Pretty Little Liars, which continues its second season with a special stand-alone episode, called "The First Secret," that will air Tuesday, Oct. 19 on ABC Family. Plus: Robert J. Thompson, professor of popular television at Syracuse University, with a look of the legacies of Steve Jobs and A.C. Nielsen, Jr.

10/5/11  Comedian Sandy Hackett, singer/songwriter Lisa Dawn Miller, actress Tanna Frederick and TV Guide business editor Stephen Battaglio will be our guests on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

The son of legendary comedian Buddy Hackett, Sandy Hackett is one of the stars and producers of Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Show, the critically acclaimed musical tribute show that many consider to be the next best thing to seeing Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop in their prime. Sandy not only plays Joey Bishop in the Rat Pack show... he knew the real Joey Bishop, as well as worked with the real Frank, Sammy and Dean. We'll talk about that, and more, when Sandy joins us in our first hour, along with his wife, singer/songwriter Lisa Dawn Miller. The daughter of legendary songwriter Ron Miller, Lisa co-produces the show with Sandy, and also appears in it as the character "Frank's One Love."

Besides its permanent home base at the Las Vegas Hilton, Sandy Hackett's Rat Pack Show is about to take its act on the road, with stops in more than 45 cities across the country as part of its 2011-2012 national theatre tour, including venues in Niagara Falls, New York, Green Bay, Wisconsin; Dubuque, Iowa; Butte, Montana; Aurora, Illinois; and Thousand Oaks, California. Tickets, tour updates and more information is available online at SandysRatPackOnTour.com.

Phil Gries will join us in our second hour for a special edition of the Sounds of Lost Television that will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Oct. 1, 1961, the day on which Roger Maris hit his 61st home run, surpassing Babe Ruth's record for most home runs in a Major League Baseball season. We'll not only hear clips of the rarely heard television broadcast of Maris' historic home run, we'll also talk about the various controversies that plagued Maris in 1961, as well as hear audio from Roger Maris himself.

Also joining us this week will be actress Tanna Frederick (Queen of the Lot, Hollywood Dreams, Sylvia). Tanna will be joining former world champion surfer Shaun Tomson in co-hosting the Fourth Annual Project SOS: Save Our Surf: SURF 24, a celebrity surfathon in support of clean water and clean oceans around the world. Project SOS takes place Oct. 15 and 16 in Santa Monica, and will benefit the global charities Waves for Water and Tumelo Home, as well as Santa Monica Baykeeper and Inside the Outdoors in Southern California. Celebrity surfers include Sam Trammell (True Blood), Tate Donovan (Damages, The O.C.), John Slattery (Mad Men), Jesse Spencer (House), Richard Burgi (Desperate Housewives), Chad Lowe (24), Gregory Harrison (One Tree Hill, Trapper John, M.D.), John Philbin (Point Break) and Kathy Zuckerman (Gidget). For information on how to register, or to find out other ways in which you can support Project SOS, check out ProjectSaveOurSurf.org.

Plus: Stephen Battaglio, business editor for TV Guide magazine, will help us sort through the first two weeks of the new TV fall season: which shows are doing well so far, which ones are in trouble, and what sort of midseason replacement series are on the horizon. It's a full program as always... we certainly hope you'll join us.

9/28/11  Join us for a look back at American adaptations of popular British TV series on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday 10/4 at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

British TV Series have been a fertile source of inspiration for American TV producers for more than four decades, not just comedies such as Til Death Do Us Part and Steptoe and Son (from which All in the Family and Sanford and Son were developed, respectively), but also dramatic programs such as Life on Mars, The Killing and Prime Suspect. In some cases, such as All in the Family, Three's Company and The Office, the American version proved just as successful as the British original. More other than not, however (such as the attempts to adapt Fawlty Towers, Couplings and Absolutely Fabulous), the American counterparts fall woefully short.

We'll take a look at notable American adaptations of British shows - some that work, and some that didn't - when television historian Paul Green (Pete Duel: A Biography, Jennifer Jones: The Life and Films) and writer, producer and comedy scholar Dan Farren (Story Salon) join Tony Figueroa and me in our second hour.

Also joining us this week will be Christine Devine, Emmy Award-winning news anchor for KTTV, FOX 11, and the spokesperson for Wednesday's Child, a national program that helps children from the foster care system find permanent families. The Wednesday's Child feature is seen every week on FOX affiliates in Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Christine's book, Finding a Forever Family: A News Anchor's Notebook on Adoption Within the Foster Care System, is a very touching story of how the Wednesday's Child program changed not only her life, but also the lives of more than 500 foster children and foster parents across the country.

Christine Devine recently received the prestigious Governor's Award from the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences for the Los Angeles area in recognition of her efforts on behalf of Wednesday's Child. In addition, the Wednesday's Child program will be receiving the National Congressional Coalition's Angels in Adoption Award in Washington, D.C. during the month of in October. Only a select number of individuals, including Laura Bush and Muhammad Ali, have received the national honor. We'll talk about how Christine came to be involved with Wednesday's Child, and more, when she joins us in our first hour.

Also in our first hour, we'll meet rising independent film director Brendan Moriarty. Brendan's first film, The Road to Freedom, tells the story of Sean Flynn, the son of legendary movie actor Errol Flynn, who gave up a promising film career to become a photojournalist for TIME magazine - where he not only helped bright to light images of the Vietnam War that were not known to the American public, but also discovered a sense of purpose for himself. The Road to Freedom opens in Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, Austin, Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities across the country during the week of Oct. 3.

9/27/11  Actress and author Julie Newmar and animator Gene Hamm will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday 9/27 at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

Known to audiences worldwide as the original Catwoman on the Batman television series, as well as her stage roles as Stupefyin Jones in Li'l Abner, Vera in Silk Stockings, Tony Award-winning performance as Katrin Sveg in The Marriage-Go-Round, and her appearances on such classic shows as The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Get Smart and Columbo, Julie Newmar is also an accomplished dancer, entrepreneur, inventor and now, author.

Julie's new book, The Conscious Catwoman Explains Life on Earth, is a delightful collection of her wit and wisdom that shows how real beauty, for all of us, lies in cultivating a happy, healthy inner life. We'll talk about that, her fondness for the Catwoman character, and some of her other favorite roles when Julie Newmar joins us in our second hour.

Julie Newmar has several appearances lined up in October and November, including Sunday, Oct. 2 at the West Hollywood Book Fair in West Hollywood Park beginning at 3:30pm; Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Book Soup, 8818 West Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, beginning at 7pm; Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Santa Monica Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd in Santa Monica beginning at 7pm; and Saturday, Nov 12 at Vromans Bookstore, 395 East Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena beginning at 5pm.

Our program this week will also include a return appearance by film and TV animator Gene Hamm. Gene's credits include The Smurfs, SuperFriends, Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings, Art Clokey's Gumby and his own original animated feature, The Dream Hat. Gene's latest effort, Created Equal, is a documentary about the art and artists of Alchemia, a program in Northern California that provides classes and venues for mentally or physically challenged adults. Julie Newmar is the narrator of Created Equal. We'll talk about the film, and more, when Gene joins us during our first hour.

Plus: we'll weigh in on this week's Emmy Awards telecast (the good, the bad and the fashions) along with Tony Figueroa, Donna Allen and Wesley Hyatt. Full program as always... we certainly hope you'll join us.

9/15/11  Fall TV Preview and a Mouseketeer Roll Call: This Week on TV CONFIDENTIAL

Go behind the scenes of the original Mickey Mouse Club on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

For millions of Baby Boomers growing up in the mid-1950s, the original Must See TV took place every weekday afternoon at five o'clock when The Mickey Mouse Club aired on ABC. And though it ran for just three seasons, the original Mickey Mouse Club remains one of the most iconic television programs ever made, more than fifty years later.

We'll talk about the legacy of The Mickey Mouse Club along with Jennifer Armstrong, senior writer for Entertainment Weekly and the author of Why? Because We Still Like You, an oral history of The Mickey Mouse Club featuring recollections from virtually every member of the original Mouseketeers, including Cubby O'Brien, Lonnie Burr, Doreen Tracey, Darlene Gillespie and, of course, Annette Funicello. Jennifer will join us in our second hour.

Also this week: Television critic Jane Boursaw will join us for a preview of some of the new shows that will premiere on network television over the next few weeks: which ones to watch, which to avoid, and which ones look to be breakaway hits. Are Pan Am and The Playboy Club worth all the hype? Will Terra Nova and The X Factor pay off for FOX? Can Ashton Kutcher breathe new life into Two and a Half Men? We'll talk about these items and more when Jane joins us in our first hour.

Plus: Pop culture historian Martin Grams with a sneak peak at the Sixth Annual MidAtlantic Nostalgia Convention, which will take place Sept. 22-23-24 at the Marriott Hotel in Hunt Valley, Maryland; and Phil Gries with a brand new edition of The Sounds of Lost Television. Full program as always... we certainly hope you'll join us.

9/7/11  Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Joseph Dougherty and independent film actress Natasha Gregson Wagner will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Tuesday at 11:05pm ET, 8:05pm PT on InternetVoicesRadio.com.

Known for her roles in such films as Two Girls and a Guy (with Robert Downey Jr. and Heather Graham), Lost Highway (directed by David Lynch), and High Fidelity (with John Cusack and Jack Black), Natasha Gregson Wagner plays a woman whose husband harbors a disturbing secret in A Kiss and a Promise, a stylishly filmed psychological thriller that begins a limited engagement at Laemmle's Sunset 5 Theater in West Hollywood, Calif. on Friday, Sept. 9. We'll talk about A Kiss and a Promise, as well as some of Natasha's other movies, when she joins us in our first hour.

Our second hour will feature a return appearance by Emmy-winning writer/producer Joseph Dougherty (Pretty Little Liars, thirtysomething, Saving Grace). Among other things, we'll go behind the scenes of Pretty Little Liars, which recently aired its midseason finale on ABC Family, but will be coming back in October as part of the 13 Days of Halloween. Joe's film Cast a Deadly Spell, an homage to Raymond Chandler and H.P. Lovecraft that he wrote for HBO, will receive a special 20th anniversary screening at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in San Pedro, Calif. on Sept. 16 and 17.

Also this week: A look at how television news covered the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as well as 9/11's impact on prime time television, late night television, and our culture in general.
